Description: This Brunswick Balke Opera House Exchange 10c Token from the 1870s is an incredibly rare find for collectors of US trade tokens. In fact, I and others have tried to find comparable tokens to help determine value, and there are absolutely NO comps we have found! This truly seems to be an exceedingly rare item! Please try to research this token… and please let us know if you can find anything. A bit of history on this token: I inherited this token from my grandfather, who was a coin and token collector. My grandfather and his family lived in South Dakota and Iowa in the early 1900s, later moving to Philadelphia in the 1930s. TokenCatalog does have a photo of a similar 5c token with some information about an Opera House and Opera Exchange House which seems to have been located in Dubuque, Iowa, though there seems to be no hard proof those tokens are directly tied to that specific Opera Exchange House. We have not found ANY other 10c Opera House Exchange tokens. From a bit of online research (Brunswick company history from their own website), The Brunswick Company merged with Balke in 1874, then the Brunswick Balke Company merged with the Collander company in 1878 to form the Brunswick Balke Collander Company. Given there are tokens which say Brunswick Balke Collander Co., but this token only says “Brunswick & Balke Co.”, it is safe to say this token was made between 1874 and 1878. Please contact us if you have any questions, or if you find any information about this token.
