Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Congratulations if you recognize this pattern! This is the same finely molded basket weave pattern first used by Wedgwood on his beehive honey pot. However, this thin walled cup and saucer was molded and produced by David Johnson, an obscure potter of English descent working in Bordeaux, France where he operated the David Johnson & Company pottery factory between 1834-1840. This is only one of two examples known to exist of this finely molded and detailed basket weave cup and saucer. The coiled straw or wheat woven beehive pattern spirals around the side of the teacup extending to the rim. This finely molded design is repeated on the inside of the saucer. The teacup is wide, measuring 4” across the rim and 2” in height, the saucer is 6” in width. The teacup survives in near mint condition with only a tiny glaze flake on the edge of the rim that doesn’t detract, the saucer has a tiny flake on the inside of the foot rim. The underside of the saucer is impressed “DAVID JOHNSON / BORDEAUX”. It is a testament to the beauty and rarity of this 190+ year old cup and saucer that they have been cherished by generations of collectors and survive in this original pristine condition. This is an extremely rare and beautiful cup and saucer for the advanced collector. This is only one of two examples I’ve ever seen in this form and does not appear in any of the books on collecting yellow ware.
