Description: Name: Euproops danae (Horseshoe Crab) Age: Pennsylvanian Formation: Braidwood Formation Location: Johnson County, MissouriSize: Concretion is 1.4 inches tall! We recently acquired some nice fossils from the late Joseph Butterfield Collection (NJ). We will be auctioning these fossils here over the next few weeks. This is a very rare invertebrate fossil. It is a horseshoe crab, Euproops danae, from the Pennsylvanian outcrops of Missouri. The distinct fossil crab exhibits very good detail - both the head and the body of this horseshoe crab are well preserved and very inflated and 3-D. The ancient crab has been fossilized in a round siderite concretion - hundreds of these concretions are broken open before one of these crabs is found. This is a very nice specimen of a primitive horsehoe crab from the Coal Age deposits of the famous Mazon Creek-like locality in Missouri.
