Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) was one of the most acclaimed and influential illustrators of the Edwardian period. His illustrations for Rip van Winkle, which pay homage to Dürer, Cruikshank and Dutch 17th century painting, were the first major works of his career as a book illustrator. The illustrations enable the story to be told twice: once through Irving's words and again through Rackham's pictures.
