Ernst Von Salomon The Questionnaire 1951 Beautiful Signed Author Dedication

Description: [GERMAN LITERATURE - POST-WAR GERMANY - WW2]Ernst VON SALOMON1902-1972  Ernst Friedrich Karl von Salomon is a German writer born September 25, 1902 in Kiel and died on August 9, 1972 in Winsen, near Hamburg. He was first a member of the Freikorps in the immediate post-war period, then an activist in the Consul Organization under the Weimar Republic, before devoting himself to writing a work essentially autobiographical. He became one of the major figures of the Conservative Revolution, but he stayed away of political life under the Third Reich and after the War. His most famous book, The Questionnaire, published in 1951, was the mouthpiece of a feeling of exasperation among the Germans faced with the absurdity of the Allied occupation.BiographyErnst von Salomon was born on September 25, 1902 in Kiel. He is the son of a senior police official, of Huguenot and Lorraine origin, and his mother is of German-Russian origin. His family, partly from Venice, obtained nationality and a title of nobility in 1827.The cadet and the free corpsHe is deeply marked by his training at the Institute of the Royal Cadet Corps in Karlsruhe, which he entered at the age of twelve to prepare for his integration into the body of the Emperor's Cadets. He approached nationalist circles after the defeat of 1918, then von Salomon was one of the first cadets to respond to Gustav Noske's call to form voluntary associations. called Freikorps in January 1919. He thus joined General Maercker's division. He then believed in the necessity of taking up arms against the “Spartacist threat” to protect the State against the internationalist aspirations of the Bolsheviks. He joined the Free Corps, which took him to the Baltic countries in 1919, with Captain Liebermann, to East Prussia and Upper Silesia in 1921, with the Freikorps Wolf, within the Baltic Free Corps.Upon returning from these expeditions, von Salomon remained in contact with his comrades. To earn a living, he became an insurance employee, then a banker. He opened a currency exchange hut, at a time when there were many of them in inflationary Germany, and, pretending to ask by telephone for information on the price of foreign securities, paid poorly informed and delighted customers a sum less than the real value of the currency offered to him.The accomplice in the attack on RathenauAt this time, multiple groups of nationalist conspirators existed in Germany. Von Salomon is part of eighteen of these groups, most often organized into veterans' associations. It is from one of them that Adolf Hitler will emerge. The Consul organization, to which von Salomon belonged, organized an attack which cost the life of Foreign Minister Walter Rathenau on June 24, 1922. Von Salomon is arrested for complicity in murder. He was sentenced the first time to five years in prison for his participation in the assassination of Rathenau, then to three years in prison for assault and battery, with mixed sentences; but an amnesty freed him at the end of 1927.In The Forsaken, he explains the reasons the nationalists had for killing Rathenau. The latter had taken sides with the defeat of 1918, the Treaty of Versailles and the servitudes imposed on Germany; he thought that Germany could only reconstitute itself by strict observance of all the clauses of the international treaties it had just signed, by obtaining from what was called the League of Nations, a sort of certificate of good living and morals. From then on, Rathenau embodied defeat, helplessness and resignation all at once. But von Salomon disputes that anti-Semitism played a role lesser role in this assassination. After his release from prison, in 1927 in Berlin he married his childhood sweetheart, Liselotte Wölbert, to whom he had become engaged in 1923. But he gradually detached himself from them over the years, until their separation in 1945.The conservative revolutionaryHe then became involved in the Conservative Revolution, while having contact with the revolutionary nationalism of Friedrich Hielscher, opposed to National Socialism, and published articles in the press of these movements. It aroused the interest of Paul Fechter who mentioned it, in April 1928, in his post from the Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung. He continues the political fight on other grounds, notably taking part in the movement peasants in the Schleswig-Holstein region in 1929, alongside his brother Bruno, which led to him being imprisoned for another four months in Moabit prison. He took the opportunity to put the finishing touches to his first autobiographical book, Les Forsakens, which covers the period 1918-1927 and is published by Ernst Rowohlt (Rowohlt-Verlag). He publishes another book of memories, The Cadets, in 1933. These two books then met with great success, unlike The City (1932), which he nevertheless considered as one of his best texts. The screenwriter at UFAWhen they came to power, the Nazis imprisoned him for a few days with Hans Fallada, then released him. Given his past as a nationalist fighter, they offered him honors which he refused. During this period, he wrote screenplays for UFA, the large German film production company, by abstaining from any political commitment. He lived from 1940 until the end of the war in the village of Siegsdorf in Upper Bavaria, with his partner at the time, Ille Gotthelft, who was Jewish. The mature writerAfter the defeat of Germany in 1945, he was interned on June 11, 1945 in an American camp. with Ille Gotthelf for a few months, the Americans of the CIC suspecting him of having been a Nazi. Ille Gotthelft was released in Mars 1946, but he was not released until September 5, 1946. The accusation of Nazism was then considered “erroneous” (erroneous arrestees), even if the film Carl Peters (1941), in which he participated, was banned by the British authorities because of its “anti-English” character. ".Salomon continues to work for the cinema and strives to defend German memory while displaying pacifist positions, such as at the Tokyo conference against the atomic bomb in 1961, at the end of which he obtained the highest Japanese distinction for peace, The Chain of a Thousand Cranes. His book published in 1951, The Questionnaire, which mocked denazification, met with great success. It became one of the first German bestsellers, selling more than 250,000 copies. A German adaptation of the book was filmed in 1985 by Norddeutsche Rundfunk, with Heinz Hoenig in the role of von Salomon.ArtworkHis work, mainly autobiographical, depicts with a mixture of irony and cynicism the decomposing German society, caught between nationalist and communist spasms and the bitterness of the defeat of 1918. These convulsions in early post-war Germany appear in his main novels: The Forsaken (Die Geächteten, 1930), The City (Die Stadt, 1932) and The Cadets (Die Kadetten, 1933). He is also the author of an essay on the spirit of the Freikorps, Near History (Nahe Geschichte, 1936) and The Epic of the Freikorpskämpfer (Das Buch vom deutschen Freikorpskämpfer, Berlin, 1938).The Forsaken, published in 1930, looks at the frustrations of German youth following the defeat of 1918. Von Salomon successively recounts his involvement in the Freikorps in the Baltic14, the putsch of Kapp, the Consul Organization, and his imprisonment for complicity in the assassination of Minister Rathenau. His most famous book remains Der Fragebogen (de) (Le Questionnaire), published in 1951, in which he notably recounts the experience of his internment in an American camp in Germany between 1945 and 1946. The title of the book refers to the document comprising 131 questions that every German citizen had to answer to establish their possible links with the Nazi regime (the most emblematic case was that of the conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler). The Questionnaire was a great success, thus revealing the persistence of trauma among the Germans. The Destiny of AD appeared in 1960, La Belle Wilhelmine in 1965.Very early admired in France, notably by Pierre Drieu la Rochelle, Ernst von Salomon wrote works which remain a reference in the culture of the nationalist right (but not only). Alain de Benoist, who devoted a fairly long notice to him in his book Seen from the right, links him to the Conservative Revolution movement. Its literary importance has also been recognized by Roger Stéphane, who compares it in Portrait of the adventurer (1986) to TE Lawrence and André Malraux, and by Marcel Schneider, who brings him closer to Jünger (Germany's Lost Shadow). -Original text in GermanDesirable copy enriched with a beautiful and rare autographed sending signed by the author to François Alexandreon the white cover sheetSigned and dated 10/15/1951 Ernest VON SALOMONDer Fragebogen Hamburg, Rowholt Verlag, 1951   Year ofFirst edition, here copy of the 4th printing (October)   -Fort In-8, (20.5x14cm), 807pp. Solid publisher's binding, full black cloth, silver titling on the spine andand silver pattern at the bottom of the first cover  Very clean binding, very well preserved, tiny friction on corners without any seriousnesscf. visuals...Very nice copy, in very good interior condition, clean and fresh   Rare with dedication from the time of publication!     See also this products: Bruce Lowery/Revanches 1970 Rare Dedication Signed By the Author Emilien Traver Poitou] The Poitevin Patois Eo 1943 Signed Author Ludovic Halévy / THE ABBOT Constantin Calmann Levy 1889 Postage Signed Author Courteline/The L Gaites Squadron Marpon-Flammarion 1893 Postage Signed Author [ Bibl.
