This Lithograph was originally obtained from Trillium Antique Prints and Rare books. This is a plate taken from Kunstformen der Natur (known in English as Art Forms in Nature), Russian version (1905). Ernst Haeckel was a renowned zoologist, an accomplished artist and illustrator, and later a professor of comparative anatomy. Although Haeckel's ideas are important to the history of evolutionary theory, and he was a competent invertebrate anatomist, he is most famous for his work on Radiolaria. He is also famous for combining art and science in his Art Forms in Nature, a book of lithographic prints. His work was originally published in German and Latin in sets of ten between 1899 and 1904 and collectively in two volumes in 1904. This lithograph comes from the Russian version printed in 1905 using the same German printer. These are identical to the original German lithographs but translated into Russian and entirely in Cyrillic type with the exception of the plate's Latin captions. First Russian editions of Haeckel's "Kunstformen der Natur" (Art Forms in Nature) are extremely rare. There are reportedly only three copies in the US and one in Israel, with another one at the Russian National Library. Printing was halted after the Russian partner of the publisher cut ties with the German firm. Needless to say, this is a very rare lithograph and will likely only go up in value. Condition These lithographs are in very good condition. There are small imperfections as a result of age and as a result of the original printing. But these do not detract from the beauty of the image. These are free hanging using acid free removable tape (filmoplast P90 Plus) as a result these lithographs are not perfectly flat. Keep in mind these originated in Russia pre-WWI. Framing This original lithograph is newly framed using a black stained hardwood frame. All materials are acid free with archival lignin free materials in contact with the original. The glass is gallery grade OP-3 acrylic to protect against fading from UV radiation. This piece should not be placed in sunlight. LED lights on the other hand, tend to be UV free. Included on the back are the associated pages from the original 1905 book. I typically ship using the US postal Service ground method but can use other shippers and methods if the buyer chooses (and pays). Returns I allow for returns within 30 days as long as the lithograph is returned in the original packaging. I strive to accurately describe these beautiful pieces of art. These pieces are not perfect. Some of my pieces are from the 18th century and as a result have had a long life associated with aging. I also price my items well below typical retail prices, especially when considering the cost of archival framing.
