ERNEST GRUENING - AUTOGRAPH - HFSID 70753 ERNEST GRUENING Signature from "The Father of Alaska Statehood" who served as Governor from 1939-1953 Signature: "Ernest Gruening/Governor of Alaska Territory/1939-1953", 3½x2 card. Appointed Governor of Alaska by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939 and twice reappointed, Ernest Gruening (1887-1974) served until 1953. He was elected to the U.S. Senate on October 6, 1955, from the Territory of Alaska as an advocate of Alaska statehood but did not take the oath of office and was not accorded senatorial privileges. Gruening was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate on November 25, 1958, and took his seat on January 3, 1959 upon the admission of Alaska as the 49th state, serving until 1969. Known as "The Father of Alaska Statehood", his ashes were scattered over Mount Ernest Gruening, north of Juneau, Alaska. Fine condition.
