Special unit «KRAKEN» is a separate reconnaissance and subversive unit of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. The unit is named after the Kraken - a mythical giant monster that brings death to enemies. As a unit, Kraken began to form a few weeks before February 24, 2022 and was finally formed on February 24, 2022 by veterans of the AZOV regiment, GUR MOU officers, ultras and volunteers. Recruits to this unit undergo a special selection and getting into Kraken is not that easy, because the tasks performed by the unit's fighters are also not easy. According to Kyrylo Budanov, the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Ukraine, «KRAKEN» is "one of the most combat-ready units" in Ukraine. With the participation of the «KRAKEN» special unit, the following were liberated: Vilkhivka, Lisne, Ruska Lozova, Pitomnyk, Belogorivka (Luhansk region), Verbivka, Balaklia, Borodoyarske, Morozivka, Savyntsi, Dovgalivka, the left-bank part of Kupyansk, Podola, Kupyansk-Vuzlovy, Kivsharivka, Novoosynovka, Glushkivka, Kolisnikovka, Kislivka, Kotlyarivka. Also, the unit took part in the battles for Kharkiv, Dementiivka, Stary Saltiv, Hrakovo, Zaliznychne, Kutuzivka, Velyki Prohody. In January 2023, he took part in battles near Soledar in the Donetsk region, and in March in Bakhmut. In May 2024, the special unit takes part in the battle for Chasiv Yar.
