It was ruled jointly by Britain and Egypt from 1899 until 1956. By agreement between father Egypt and mother England, Sudan became independent 1/1/56. Since then, Sudan has been ruled by a succession of unstable civilian and military governments. The country has been in a state of civil war for many years, and human rights abuses are widespread. This presentation covers the period from 1867 to the First World War, concentrating on Kitchener’s advance before the Battle of Omdurman but also bringing in other areas, like the Abyssinian War, British Somaliland, and Uganda, when applicable to Sudan's Military History.
