HASrtist:Francois Bealu (1932-2020)Artist French painter, engraver and designerFrançois Béalu is an engraver, draftsman and painter born in 1932 in Amilly. He died in 2020 in Tréduder, Brittany, where he had lived since 1971François Béalu was born in Amilly (Loiret) in 1932. As a teenager, he studied in Joigny (Yonne), where he was the only student in the optional drawing course. He discovered the wild coasts of northern Brittany with his uncle Marcel Béalu during a trip in 1956, a trip that he felt was an awakening to life. Then, in 1957, he left for Stockholm where he earned his living in a wood veneer factory, and began to draw. He undertook a long trip by scooter to Lapland, and returned via Oslo where he discovered the sculptures in Vigeland Park. Returning to France in 1960, he opened his first bookstore, La Mandragore, at 17 rue de l'Ouest in Paris, dedicated to fantasy literature and science fiction. François Béalu engraved his first board in 1963. Two years later he moved to rue des Grands Augustins. He continues drawing and participates in the illustration of the volumes of the Encyclopédie Planète collection. Engraving became his dominant activity. His first boards are a reflection of his earlier, phantasmagorical drawings, where organic forms dominate. Total breakup in 1971. François Béalu leaves Paris and settles in Côtes-d'Armor. From then on, he devoted himself entirely to engraving. After two years of personal research he began a series of bodies and rocks. The alignments of Carnac and the Quiberon peninsula inspired the Mégalithes series, Expedition to the Mégalithes in 1982 and Return to the Mégalithes in 1983, two large engraved frescoes measuring three meters long. The preferred engraving technique is then etching and aquatint for these works which are both mineral and organic. In 1987 a new period began with the abandonment of minerals for plants and the return to drypoint. As we see in The White Valley, in the vaguely oriental Triptych and in a series of large landscapes, the technique, more gestural, offers more freedom to movement. It was in Mars 1990 that François Béalu met Gilles Clément, engineer and landscaper. He presented him with a project for an artist's book, Éloge de la friche, which would be published in 1994 by Lacourière-Frélaut. Eight drypoints by François Béalu with a text by Gilles Clément will compose this work. This meeting will be the starting point of a friendship and a shared view of the landscape. In Tunis, where he participated in an exhibition, his eye was drawn to the ceramic tiles on the walls of the old houses in the medina. They inspire him with geometric series and multiples. With the writer and philosopher Claude Louis-Combet, he worked on an artist's book, Landscape of Limits, which would be published in 1999 by Éditions Folle Avoine. The Musée des Jacobins in Morlaix devoted a personal exhibition to him in 1996 and published the catalog raisonné of his engraved work. He went to Poland and participated in the exhibition Quinze artistes des Côtes d'Armor in Olsztyn. The early 2000s were a period of research in several directions for François Béalu. A new book, L'Exhaustion de la ligne, is published with a text by Sylvie Lawrence-Friedman. He exhibited around a hundred of these drypoints, as part of Art in the Chapels, in 2001. The artist also creates small elements of sculpture and begins prints on linen canvas. He is designing an interactive CD-Rom Le Carré infini with Éditions Commedia. He published the book The Perimeter Strategy, with a text by S. Lawrence and started the first works in the Characters series. In 2008, two new books were published: Le Gardien des Chutes, ten imprints of cut and hammered zinc, with a text by S. Lawrence, and, On the margin, with a text by Gilles Clément.
