THIS PRINT IS FROM THE EARLY 1840s & IS NOT A MODERN REPRODUCTION IN ANY WAY! FROM THE ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: About twelve miles from Carlisle, and two from Brampton, stand the ruined halls of Naworth Castle, so lately the most perfect and interesting specimen of a baronial seat in the north of England. Surrounded by aged forest-trees, that adorn arid dignify an extensive park, this grand relic of feudal times was amongst the chief boasts of Cumberland; and the jealous care with which it was preserved by its noble Owner, was not less memorable than the liberality with which its numberless antique treasures were exhibited to the visitor. The site is bold and picturesque,-an emminence commanding the junction of the Irthing with one of its tributaries, and an extensive prospect over the fine vale of St. Mary Hoime, watered by these united streams, enriched by luxuriant and majestic oaks, and graced by the gray ruins of Lanercost Priory. The ground-plan of the Castle is a square, the angles at each extremity of the south, or principal front, being occupied by lofty embattled towers, the termini of a curtain, or screen, the centre of which is pierced by a lofty gate of entrance. The north front rises from the edge of a precipitous cliff, frowning upon the torrent that foams and tumbles along at its base, while power, dignity, and severity characterise the whole design, conveying a rather unfavourable impression of the subordination that belonged To a government purely aristocratic. Entering the court-yard, the various apartments of ceremony, guard-houses, chapel, donjon present themselves, but the eye of curiosity anxiously turns towards the entrance to the chambers of the chivalrous" Will,"Plated doors afforded access to them, and a winding staircase, admitting but one person at a time, was secured above and below by immense locks and heavy bolts. A gallery, one hundred feet in length, conducted to the state-apartments, where a choice collection of books and articles of virtu were once preserved, as well as many most interesting examples of the perfection to which sculpture and painting had attained in England in those ages, in the decorated ceilings and carved mantel-pieces. The great hall, upwards of seventy feet in length, was adorned with portraits of the Scottish kings; the drawing and dining-rooms with tapestry and paintings, the latter including a celebrated portrait of Queen Mary of England, while a display of ancient armour Was made in the chapel, where the patriarchs, and the kings of Israel and Judah, were represented on the panelled ceiling and the altar screens there was no feature in the mansion more striking than the total want of confidence which the closely grated windows in every part of the building betrayed. It left room but for one conclusion, namely, that the lord of Naworth felt little less apprehension from his own retainers, than from the fierce freebooters whom he took an especial pleasure in hunting like beasts of the forest. Of all the interesting and valuable relics of which this venerable pile was the repository, few now remain to gratify curiosity, or satisfy the love of ancient lore; the old wooden-bound books, the coat of mail, the dingy tapestry, the various articles of ancient furniture, that marked the very ages of our history, all, or nearly all, have perished in a luckless conflagration, and a heap of ruins is all that now remains of this once beautiful and formidable border-fortress. Even in legends Naworth Castle was rich, and Scott drew often on this treasury of tales, and other poets have woven the achievements of its lords into their pleasing lyrics. Connected with the history of the first lords of the Castle, " The Bridal of Naworth" is perhaps one of the most affecting tales, amongst those which the chroniclers of the north have long continued to tell. "ENGRAVINGS", the term commonly used for these paper prints, were the most common method in the 1700s and 1800s for illustrating old books, and these paper prints or "engravings" were inserted into the book with a tissue guard frontis, usually on much thicker quality rag stock paper, although many were also printed and issued as loose stand alone prints. So this auction is for an antique paper print(s), probably from an old book, of very high quality and usually on very thick rag stock paper. EXTREMELY RARE TO FIND IN THIS EXCELLENT CONDITION!
