Description: Chinese Cultural Revolution Enamel Mug Collection Author: [ENAMEL CULTURAL REVOLUTION MUGS] Title: Chinese Cultural Revolution Enamel Mug Collection Publication: (Circa 1966- 1979) Description: A collection of seven enamel cups from the Chinese Cultural Revolution era, produced or distributed as awards or tributes by various different organisations. These group include local revolutionary committees, county-level workers' unions, and construction site headquarters. Although enamel on these mugs is chipped and rusted in various places, only one is badly affected with the interior of the mug almost completely discoloured. Although used, and in one case heavily so, this group is nevertheless a very interesting collection of scarce mugs. Two of the cups were designed as a tribute to Comrade Wang Jie and bear the inscription 'To Learn from Comrade Wang Jie'. Comrade Wang Jie displayed immense bravery during a training exercise in July 1965, when he selflessly sacrificed himself to save 12 militiamen and cadres from a perilous situation involving an explosive package. Despite having the option to stay safe by staying back, he fearlessly chose to take action. Three cups were designed as memorabilia, intended to reward veterans who actively sought jobs, model workers, or those who were members of the workers' union. One cup features a quotation from Chairman Mao: 'The people, and only the people, are the driving force behind the creation of world history'. The final cup was designed as a victory souvenir and was distributed by the Condolence Team of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee. When referring to this item please quote stockid 214384.
