Document type : signed autograph letters Number of documents: 7 - Number of pages: 11 - Size: In-8, in-12 and in-16 Place : Paris and Villerville (Calvados) Date : 1884-1891 RECIPIENT : Alfred de Foville (1842-1913), economist, permanent secretary of the Ac des Sciences morales et politiques. State : very good In these seven letters, the economist Pierre-Émile Levasseur talks with his young colleague Alfred de Foville for whom he shows great respect: "I indeed appreciated your beginnings as those of a man who had the qualities of precision and research to make him a name in economics. I have since followed with interest the development of your work in L'Économiste français, and I am delighted for you and for the collection that you have been entrusted with the editing of the Bulletin de la statistique. Levasseur also called on his colleague for the transmission of statistical data necessary for his work: "I will need tomorrow for my course at the Conservatory [of Arts and Crafts] the information indicated in the following two tables for the foreign trade of year 1883 (special trade). " He also asks him: "Can you give me your assessment of the average price in France (1889-1891 approximately): selling price at the producer of a hectolitre of wine, a liter of milk, a cent of eggs?” But it is above all questions of internal politics at the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences that occupy him: "The candidacy of which you speak makes a certain path in the academy, which, by moral reaction, seems to exert an opposite influence on the section. This tendency is not good, but I do not believe that it is time yet to seek to restore harmony. Thus, Levasseur appears as a real support for Foville who will be, twenty years later, president of the Academy then its perpetual secretary: “The section was unhappy; I regret it for her and for me who was her interpreter; I regret it for the academy whose morals are altered by this fact; I regret it for our two candidates who certainly deserved more consideration and I particularly regret it for you, my dear colleague, whose assistance would have been invaluable to us for the work of the section. […] you must not be discouraged. You're young: that's the objection people made to you, wrongly, but probably because they couldn't think of a more serious one. Those who voted against you, however, have for you, according to the testimonies I have heard, only feelings of esteem. Two of the letters are on the letterhead of 28, rue Monsieur le Prince, two others of the College de France.
