Description: The Author's 8th Mystery, published in January 1940. 1st edition. Her first of four novels under the Bloodhound mystery imprint of Duell Sloan and Pearce. A young woman, working as a traveling salesman, meets three strangers onboard a train. The reader soon discovers that one of the men, a paranoid lunatic, has privately decided to muder the young woman at the first opportunity. Holding switches perspectives from from chapter to chapter between the protagonist (her ever increasing feeling of unease) and her assailant (his paranoid inner monologues), but also cleverly keeping his identity concealed until the end. Condition: A GOOD- book in a GOOD/GOOD+ dj. A former lending Library copy. This particular copy has water damage to the binding, and the textblock. The cloth is worn along the edges of the boards, as well as the head and tail of the spine. Several exlib stamps and related notations. Pages are age toned, with occasional staining. DJ has been trimmed by 1/2 in, and is glued to the boards. DJ also shows a slight wrinkling, a typical side-effect of old-style jacket protectors. A very worn copy. However, in spite of its many flaws, the binding remains firm and the hinges are very sound. The jacket is surprisingly vibrant, all things considered, and much rarer than the book itself. A worthwhile placeholder copy of a very uncommon book, by a very well regarded writer, which rarely survives with a jacket in any condition. The only other copy (presently) anywhere in the marketplace is admittedly much superior, listed at 450$, with a chipped and sun-darkened spine, and a slanted binding). All questions welcome. thanks for looking.
