Description: ~ Hand-painted in Egypt on the finest handmade papyrus paper, this work of art features a scene from the Books of the Dead (*more on this below) of ancient Egyptian Kha, and his wife, Meryt, as they stand before Osiris, The Lord of the Dead, presenting offerings and awaiting judgement. Kha, a skilled architect who led the construction of royal tombs in the mid-Eighteenth Dynasty of early Egypt, designed the couples’ lavish pyramid-shaped burial chambers, discovered undisturbed in 1906. Hieroglyphics tell their story. A translation chart is included. ~ *Books of the Dead were a collection of magic spells written on papyrus scrolls and enclosed in the burial chambers of Egyptian tombs. These incantations were believed to help guide and protect the deceased on their perilous journey to the underworld, in search of Osiris and the Hall of Judgement, where the tribunal would determine whether one could achieve immortality as an akh, or be eaten by the demon Ammut. ~ One owner purchased in Eqypt, circa 1990’s, still in original plastic packaging. Papyrus is approximately 17.25”W x 13.25”H. Can be trimmed for framing; actual painted image measures 13”W x 8.25”H. Comes with certificate of authenticity. ~ A process that dates back thousands of years, Papyrus paper is handmade in Egypt from the inner stem of the finest Cyperus Papyrus plants. The sheets are formed by arranging strips side by side in two cross layers, then soaking them in water for six to twelve weeks. The natural colors develop in water and become darker the longer it soaks.
