Description: An impressive antique Edwardian sterling silver cigarette / cigar box, in its original box, by Henry Matthews (Birmingham, UK; 1902). Plain rectangular form with rounded corners. The surface of this impressive cigar/ cigarette box is plain and unembellished. The box is fitted with two hinged covers each embellished with the contemporary bright cut engraved elucidating inscription “Cigars” and “Cigarettes”. The interior of each compartment, in addition to the compartmentalised body features a cedar wood lining. This antique box has a weighted base and retains the original leatherette covering to the underside. This fine example of Edwardian silverware is fitted to the original hinged leatherette presentation box, with a satin and velvet lined interior, securing with a hinged catch. The interior of the box bears the retailer’s mark “Goldsmiths & Diamond Merchants, Harris & Co, Cape town, Kimberleye, Johannesburg”.Dimensions: 8.8”x4.8”x2.8”.
