Description: This is a portrait from a painting that is signed by its subject, Edward M. "Colonel" House (1858-1938). It is inscribed in black ink, "To Harriet Wright-with the affectionate regard of, EMHouse London 1920".I have no way of knowing for sure, but there was a contemporary of Mr. House named Harriet Wright who was a suffragist and member of the Colorado House of Representatives from 1899-1901. Mr. House's daughter, Janet House Auchincloss, was prominent in the suffragette movement in her youth.Mr. House was a businessman and diplomat who became a close advisor to President Woodrow Wilson. He was internationally known as Colonel House, but he had performed no military service. He was an enigmatic politician and advisor to several politicians, and there are books written about his time advising President Wilson that describe him as Wilson's right-hand man and silent partner. The painting for this image was an oil on canvas done in 1916 by the Anglo-Hungarian artist Philip de Laszlo (1869-1937). It was donated to the Yale University Art Gallery by Mr. House's daughter, Janet House Auchincloss. Mr. De Laszlo's signature is barely discernable (only under magnification) on the painting, in the lower left-hand corner of the painting.Mr. House was President Wilson's chief advisor on European politics and diplomacy during World War I, despite holding no office. He became a government official as one of the five American Commissioners to the Paris Peace Conference of 1919.In 1912 Mr. House anonymously published a novel entitled, Phillip Dru: Administrator, in which the title character leads the western American states against the eastern American states and becomes the dictator of America. It is still in print.Mr. House was very influential in Texas political circles. One of the four men he helped get elected Governor was James S. Hogg in 1892. In 1893, Governor Hogg appointed Mr, House to his military staff with the rank of lieutenant colonel, a position which came with no military responsibilities. He was reappointed to that position by the next three men he helped to become Governor (Culberson, Sayers and Lanham), and became known as "Colonel House", a title he used for the rest of his life.He backed Woodrow Wilson for the Presidency and in return President Wilson offered him the cabinet position of his choice (except for Secretary of State, which was pledged to William Jennings Bryan). He declined the offer but was provided living quarters within the White House. There are stains/discoloration, mostly on the mount, along with tears along the edges. There are notations on the reverse, please see each of the photographs. Domestic USPS Priority Mail with tracking and insurance is included.International shipping is through eBay's International Shipping service. In this service the seller ships the purchased item to eBay's domestic shipping hub, and then eBay collects the appropriate shipping fees and handles all of the international details/requirements, including the Customs paperwork.I am listing several autographs of politicians associated with President Wilson's administrations. Almost all have been authenticated by PSA/DNA; they did not have Mr. House in their authentication database. Thank you for looking!
