Description: Strictures on the Letters Addressed to Lord Grenville and Lord Howick, upon the Removal from the Councils of the King, by a Protestant Author: [Cooke, Edward] A Protestant (pseudonym) Title: Strictures on the Letters Addressed to Lord Grenville and Lord Howick, upon the Removal from the Councils of the King, by a Protestant Publication: Newcastle Upon Tyne: D. Akenhead and Sons, 1807 Description: Disbound. near Very Good binding. Octavo. [2], 53, [1] pp. Removed from volume. Binding residue to the inner margin; light toning, but generally, a clean copy. A response to Cooke's letters, signed "A Protestant" that were originally published in the Morning Post. The author of this present defense of Lord Grenville and Lord Howick is not identified. A turbulent time for the Grenville administration, these complains from Cooke towards Charles Grey (Lord Howick) and Prime Minister William Grenville were centered in a growing movement towards Catholic emancipation in the first decades of the 19th century. The author of this defense of Grenville and Grey makes some speculation on who authored the letters. Many names are proffered, but not Cooke's. This issue would ultimately be the undoing of Grenville and he would resign as prime minister. Uncommon with scarcely a half a dozen institutional holdings according to OCLC.
