John Ernst Steinbeck, Jr., who lived from 1902 – 1968, was reared in Salinas, California, and attended Stanford University. "Cannery Row" opens with these lines describing Monterey, California: "It is a poem, a stink, a grating noise, a quality of light, a tone, a habit, a nostalgia, a dream, the gathered and scattered, tin and iron and rust and splintered wood, chipped pavement and weedy lots and junk heaps, sardine canneries of corrugated iron, honky tonks, restaurants and whore houses." Set during the Great Depression in a street lined with sardine canneries, known as Cannery row, the story revolves around Lee Chong, the local grocer, Doc, a marine biologist, and Mack, the leader of a group of derelict people. Lee Chong's grocery, while not a model of neatness, was a miracle of supply. Mack and the "boys" adore "Doc Ricketts," whose Western Biological laboratory, sits near the water. Mack and his friends are always looking for something nice to do for Doc who has been good to them. The "boys" throw a thank-you party for Doc and the entire community quickly become involved. Mack and the boys "aid" Doc in gathering specimens from the sea for experimentation. In spite of his friendliness and his friends, Doc was a lonely and a set-apart man, always alone. Doc was a night crawler; he always had to know not only the tides but when a particular tide was good. Doc was a scholar but was at home with farmers, down-and-out men and women, and mountain people. Everyone liked him, especially the whores from the flophouse. Doc could hear violas and cellos in his head as he ate his peanut butter sandwiches and drank his cold beer and continued his scientific research. Steinbeck was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. 196 pages. I offer combined shipping.
