Description: Charcoal portrait by Eastman Johnson (US 1824 - 1906) of local Augusta, Maine Luminary Leonard Thomas. Subject and artist written to rear board of original early 19th Century frame. Wood frame is an inch thick and secured with original square head nails. This is a rarely early artwork produced by the most notable American portrait artist as a child before he honed his craft. Frame measures 16 1/4 x 14 1/2 inches with the image measuring 13 x 11 1/2 inches. Portrait in poor condition with notable amounts of cracking of the paper due to exposure to moisture many years ago. Original early 19th Century frame solid with bowing to wood backing. No glass with frame.
