Description: Nice set of Volumes detailing the life and thoughts of Marc Aurelius of antiquity. Translated and annotated by Anne Dacier and her husband. While both were translators, Anne was considered the better scholar. This is one of their earlier works before her masterwork translation of the Iliad. This is the second edition and is heavily annotated by the translators. The volumes are in very good condition, with the binding tight and clean. Discoloration and foxing due to age. Some woodcuts on title pages; volume one has great portrait of “Marcus Aurele Antonin”. Occasional decorated capital and embellishments on some pages either at the beginning of a section or the end. Nice bookplate from John “Marquess of Tueeddale Earle of Gifford Viscount of Walden, Lord Hay of Yester &c.”. Second edition with remarks in the text or “footnotes” as we would call them. All in all, a fascinating bit of literary history with translations by an early female scholar. Very Good Condition: 12mo, 2 volumes, Leather Binding with ridged spine: gilt lettering and decoration. Some holes at top of spine on both volumes. Bookplates inside front in both volumes. Notation in old ink inside spare page on both. “Reflexions Morales de l’Empereur Marc Antonin avec des Remarques de Mr. & Mad. Dacier. Second Edition, ou l’on a mis les Remarques sous le Texte”.
