Description: Early (pre-1982) Barbados Cotton Flower (Gossypium barbadense) 6 1/2" oatmeal/cereal bowl. Single flower head design lacks the plant's botanical and common names and instead includes a small, light green "4" below the green moth at right. Version of the Second Trophy ID backstamp has Susan Williams-Ellis's name in banner below and a small, bold italicized "1972" in an oval at bottom center. *The Cotton Flower is one of the original six oatmeal bowl motifs. It replaced the Aloe on the 6" bread-and-butter plates in 1976 (and the Aloe replaced the Cotton Flower on the oatmeal bowls) as well as appeared on other pieces before finally being retired in 1988. During that time, the motif underwent several changes: it was introduced with one flower head, as seen here, but later versions have 2, 3 or 4 heads as well as different insects. **As for the small, light green "4", Portmeirion used a numbering system for the Botanic Garden motifs in the late 1970s and/or early 1980s - I have yet to find a source stating an exact start and/or end date. (See Jenkins and McKay, Portmeirion Pottery [2000], p. 111, and https://james-antique.com/oatmeal-c-1_5_86.html. Jenkins and McKay also note that, since the oatmeal bowls originally did not include the botanical/common names as the other Botanic Garden pieces did, they might have been numbered earlier as "an aid to identification".) ***Second Trophy ID backstamp was used 1972/3-1982 (see https://www.purelyportmeirion.co.uk/portmeirion-botanic-garden-reference-guide and others). This is one of two early (same vintage) Botanic Garden oatmeal bowls I am listing, the other is the Ivy-Leaved Cyclamen (Cyclamen repandum). The bowls have been packed away together for at least 15-20+ years with other vintage ceramics (some also being listed). Unfortunately, I do not know - and can not find - any particulars about either (i.e. how, when, where, why or from whom they were acquired). Price for this bowl reflects flaw in print transfer and slight color mis-registration along left portion of bottom leaf (see Condition Description and pics). Offers for both bowls welcome; I am happy to combine shipping. From a smoke-free home.
