Description: Early David Gil Cooperative Design Bennington Potters Vase Weed Pot. Celebrate the 100th anniversary of David Gil, born on May 29, 1922 in New York City, founder, owner and primary designer of his Vermont pottery from 1948 through 2002. Begun as Cooperative Design following his graduation from Alfred University, Gil discarded that business name in favor of Bennington Potters in 1965. Though Gil died in 2002, twenty years ago this year, the business continues to operate and still produces some of Gil’s original designs. The most interesting and awarded work Gil produced was during the Cooperative Design phase of his business. There are fewer examples of his work from this period found due to the passage of time, but also because Gil had not yet expanded and ramped up his commercial business with added space, staff and huge ceramic production kilns. These early pieces are the most cherished by private Gil collectors. Prices are still relatively affordable since David Gil is largely undiscovered and has not yet been the focus of major museums. The Bennington Museum hosted a retrospective in 2009. These are probably not pieces you will want to use. These are pieces you will want to protect and cherish, to display and enjoy. These pieces are David Gil’s legacy. This weed pot is an early example of Gil’s work. It bears an early logo ink stamped on the bottom. Later the company’s logo application became much more characteristic of mass reproduction. This vase has all the bubbles and drips of Gil’s early pottery. It has speckled glaze, one of his early styles. A little less than 4 1/2 inches tall and 3 1/4 inches wide. Reference: Hands & Minds: David Gil's Bennington Potters, Volume 1
