Description: This bottle is documented in Betty Zumwalt's book, "Ketchup, Pickles, Sauces: Nineteenth Century Food in Glass", on page 165. She lists it as rare; its contents peppersauce. When Gedney Pickles started in 1880, they offered only pickles. After opening a branch in Chaska, Minnesota in 1900, sauerkraut was added to the product line. The company soon added other vinegar-based products, such as mustard, relishes, olives, catsup, Worcestershire sauce, horseradish sauce and tobacco pepper sauce. This is a pepper sauce, not a catsup. They were only made for a few years and then Gedney focused on pickles which are still made today. The bottle is decorative going from a 3-inch hexagonal base and gracefully rising to 9”, bubbling out at the neck, with a taper to ¾” at the lip. On the base it is embossed “THE M. A. GEDNEY PICKLING CO”. It is crudely made with a 1” flaw line at the base and stretch marks on the neck. A cork top but would have had a metal closure. It is just starting to turn a sun-colored amethyst and others from that company have gone a dark purple when exposed to the sun. It is in dug condition but very clean with no chips or cracks.
