More modern equipment is presented in color. The whole range of cars beginning with wooden ore cars up to the many variations of steel cars make this a complete history of the Missabe's fleet.But the DM&IR had more than ore cars, even though the fleet was mostly ore cars, box cars, flat cars and even refrigerator cars are detailed. Of course, the Missabe had many cabooses both wooden and steel. An attractive paint scheme developed in the early 1960s was maroon with gold lettering (University of Minnesota colors) and the color photographs with various non-ore car equipment looks sharp. There is a color 2-page photograph of Proctor yard taken at the height of Missabe's busiest time with many steam engines with shiny black paint in 1953.Maps, lettering diagrams, herald drawings, ore dock dimensions, a large list of mines served and many other statistics plus all the roster information makes this a complete work.As with any railroad, the freight and passenger equipment of the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range was the lifeblood of its work. The railroad is famous for its traffic in iron ore, but there were other major parts to its traffic also, such as pulpwood. The fleet of cars of the company, its operations, and the history behind it, are the focus of this book. But the car fleet only makes sense in terms of the industries the railroad served, and a rich trove of information on that subject is here too.
