On "United States Senate" letterhead, Hatfield sends "Many, many thanks for sending along a copy of Abraham Lincoln, The Man Behind the Myths. With each new book on the President I find more reasons to study Lincoln carefully, as is true with almost all the former Presidents." Signed simply "Mark" in black fineline; he also crosses out the typed "Mr. Newman" and writes in "Ralph." Hatfield (1922-2011) served as Oregon's governor (1959-67) and senator (1967-97). Newman's large custom Bernhardt Wall-engraved Lincoln-theme bookplate graces the front pastedown.
