Take your instrument and get ready to play as usual. Now strum a chord. Next lift your strumming arm, at the shoulder, up off the guitar then strum again. Listen to the difference. By placing your arm against the top of the guitar, you lose between 15% and 20% of the power and projection of the top of the guitar! The top is the main sounding board of your instrument. When you lay your arm on it, there is a dampening or muting effect. Violin, Mandolin, and Banjo players have been using arm rests for many years for these same reasons.
