Dimensions: 17-1/4" x 17-1/4" x 3/8" sheet. Edition of 75. SIGNED, titled 'White Pines' and dated 'April 2009' by the artist in pencil (vertically along left margin), numbered '29/75' (lower right). Printed and published by Mixografia Worshshop, Los Angeles, CA. Excellent / NEW condition with no visible defects (never framed or displayed). The Mixografia® unique fine art printing process provides a way for artists to create a 3-dimensional relief print with texture and very fine surface detail on handmade paper. The workshop has printed and published limited edition fine art since 1968 producing over 500 titles for artists world-wide. The Mixografia® printmaking technique is a unique fine art printing process that allows for the production of three-dimensional prints with elements of relief, texture and very fine surface detail. The process begins when the artist creates a model or “maquette” out of any combination of materials from which the edition will be produced. A sequence of plates is then cast and molded from the maquette, resulting in a reverse three-dimensional cooper printing plate. The plate retains the shape and fine detail of the artist’s original concept. The printing inks are applied by hand on the plate by the Master Printers, and moist paper pulp, produced entirely in-house from pure cotton fibers, is laid over the inked plate. The paper and printing plate are then run through the press under extremely high pressure, forcing the moist paper into every crevice of the highly sensitive printing plate, registering every nuance on its surface and transferring the ink to the paper. Because the paper is still wet as it runs through the press, the ink is absorbed into the paper’s fibers, giving the prints extremely rich, saturated color and fresco-like qualities. After the print has run through the press it is pulled from the plate and set to dry. Once the edition is complete, each print is numbered and signed by the artist. Born in 1951, Donald Sultan was one of the most significant artists to emerge in the 1980's. Sultan uses traditional subject matter such as the landscape, cityscape and still life to create works that are bold and new. His pictures make strong, immediate visual statements. Often his colors, shapes and patterns contain ambiguity, where a lemon could be a person's eye or street lamps and smokestacks could look like the long stems of flowers. A highly collected artist, Sultan received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1975.
