Born in 1951, Donald Sultan was one of the most significant artists to emerge in the 1980's. Sultan uses traditional subject matter such as the landscape, cityscape and still life to create works that are bold and new. His pictures make strong, immediate visual statements. Often his colors, shapes and patterns contain ambiguity, where a lemon could be a person's eye or street lamps and smokestacks could look like the long stems of flowers. A highly collected artist, Sultan received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1975. He currently lives in New York.
