SIGNED, titled 'Black and Red' and dated 'April 25, 2007' by the artist in pencil (vertically along left margin), numbered (lower right), with the artist and publisher stamp. The centers of the flowers and background are black flocked and the background is then over-printed with three passes of black enamel ink. Excellent / NEW condition with no visible defects (never framed or displayed; shown are framed examples). Black and Red, April 25, 2007 is a print belonging to Donald Sultan's famous Flower series. The artist is credited for the revival of the still life tradition where the image is deconstructed to the basic elements, thus Sultan's work remains both abstract and representational. Akin to Sultan's paintings this work represents the deep red poppies set against black background. The image reveals one of the key features of Sultan's work - the material juxtaposition- the contrast of a weighty background with ethereal shapes of the flowers. The printing technique translates the Sultan's original paintings’ texture: linoleum, tar, flocking, plaster, tile, wood.Born in 1951, Donald Sultan was one of the most significant artists to emerge in the 1980's. Sultan uses traditional subject matter such as the landscape, cityscape and still life to create works that are bold and new. His pictures make strong, immediate visual statements. Often his colors, shapes and patterns contain ambiguity, where a lemon could be a person's eye or street lamps and smokestacks could look like the long stems of flowers. A highly collected artist, Sultan received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1975. He currently lives in New York.
