Based on the bookplate, this particular copy of Mackenzie Wallace's Russia has once belonged to Lady Theresa Susey Helen Chetwynd-Talbot Vane-Tempest-Stewart (1856-1919), Marchioness of Londonderry. Wife of Charles Vane-Tempest-Stewart (1852-1915), Governor-General of Ireland. The Marquess was a major Conservative politician, landowner and benefactor in the British Empire at the time. Lady Theresa herself was quite an interesting character. She was an extremely influential person in her position at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in Ireland, but she seems to be better remembered for the relationship scandals she caused. The picture in the bookplate was apparently taken at an occasion where the Marchioness was dressed as the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria. At least the hairstyle and the necklace match. The book is a classic of its kind, but this time the content of the book is likely to remain behind its ownership history in terms of interest! **** In two volumes.
