La infeliz marcha de los acontecimientos desemboca en un enfrentamiento entre la tía y el sobrino, cuando ésta se niega a que la hija se case con un descreído. La novela, una de las mejores y más difundidas de Pérez Galdós, profundiza en el análisis psicológico de sus personajes, se deleita en la descripción de ambientes, y entra al estudio de problemas sociológicos a la manera del naturalismo, ya difundido en España. Pero la riqueza imaginativa del autor es lo que predomina en la obra, por lo que Doña Perfecta destaca principalmente como excelente representación de pasiones en pugna.
