DON NEWCOMBE DIED 2-19-19 IN LOS ANGELES. DON NEWCOMBE was born 6/14/1926 in Madison, New Jersey and he's a former Negro League and Major League Baseball Star. He was the 1949 Rookie of the Year, was the 1956 NL MVP, the 1956 Cy Young Winner as best NL pitcher, was a 4 time All-Star. He led the league in wins and strikeouts, was part of the famed 1955 World Championship Brooklyn Dodgers. He played for the Newart Eagles in the Negro Leagues, Brooklyn Dodgers, Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians in MLB and played in the Nippon Pro BB League in Japan for the Chunichi Dragons in 1962. Overall his MLB stats include a 153-96 record, 3.54 ERA, 1183 Strikeouts and as a more than competent hitter a .262 average with 12 homers and 43 RBI. He was a recovering alcoholic for over 20+ years. This signed item is unique. This autograph was obtained in 1992 (30+ years ago) and was signed in black ink and has been in a private collection since then. IT IS NOT PERSONALIZED, READS BEST WISHES! Both sides of the 2" x 5" inch rectangular scrap of yellow note paper are pictured. The front side is autographed in pen and has the details identifying when it was signed ("1992").
