Hvorostovsky won the BBC Cardiff International Vocal Competition in 1989 and quickly became a new star in the opera world. He was handsome, charismatic, had an astonishing voice, and had the artistry and charm to bring the audience to their feet. And indeed, for a quarter of a century, he continued to play an active role, but his career was suddenly cut off after being diagnosed with cancer, and he sadly passed away at the young age of 55 in 2017. But the Siberian baritone's dedication to his recital repertoire, his determination to bring his native genre of Russian romance to audiences around the world, both in concert and in recordings, is a testament to his contemporaries. Among them, it was outstanding. Although he could fill a football stadium with an opera medley, he chose to sing Spring Floods and Dark Nights to small recital audiences. And I have recorded much of this repertoire for Phillips.
