Description: Divining the Woman of Endor : African Culture, Postcolonial Hermeneutics, and the Politics of Biblical Translation, Hardcover by Kiboko, J. Kabamba, ISBN 0567673677, ISBN-13 9780567673671, Like New Used, Free shipping in the US The author examines 1 Samuel 28 and the woman of Endor from the perspective of the Christian church in Central Africa and the need to translate biblical texts so they remain faithful to the original text and context and also make sense to the worldview of African readers. She analyzes this narrative through an African feminist postcolonial lens to understand the negative and positive attitudes toward divination within and beyond the text. She argues that the language of divination in the Hebrew Bible is conflicted and considers the meanings of divinatory terms beyond their designated ones, to understand their polyglottic nature, using the theories of Mikhail Bakhtin, and how the woman of Endor illustrates this conflict. She argues that much of the language in this passage has been mistranslated and shows how translations reflect the negative views of magic in Christian European culture, as well as the role of gender in this misinterpretation and mistranslation, as the woman of Endor is minimized, dismissed, or labeled as a witch, revealing how these negative views were passed on to African culture through the colonial period. She provides new translations of 1 Samuel 28 in English, French, and Kisanga, that are faithful to the original text and better for the African pro-divinatory Christian context and an inculturated African Christian hermeneutic, theology, and praxis.
