This handmade German marble has a bold divided core within a clear matrix; the four-way core constructed from yellow-backed transparent green and white-backed transparent red - a technique which always makes the colours show at their best. The early-style pontil is finely faceted, and indicates that it was made between 1850 and 1880. Divided Core marbles make good additions to a collection of German antique varieties, and were a fundamental mainstay of marble production from the early glass factories of the time. They come in such a huge range of colour and style: typically with a number of split or divided vanes, often symmetrically arranged and with bright, contrasting colours or translucent jelly elements. Sometimes they have a filleted, ribbed or striped appearance to each vane adding extra interest; and usually they have an outer decorative layer nearer the surface. They are a much-loved and highly collected variety, their beautiful colours and fun design making for an eye-catching and intricate spectacle - highly varied, detailed and captivating.
