Reiki is a Japanese energy transference technique that promotes mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual balance. Reiki is the combination of the word Rei which refers to the wisdom of a higher power, and Ki which references an unseen life force energy. Therefore Reiki is a divinely guided transference of this energy for the benefit of the recipient. Reiki is a very safe method of care. Although spiritually based it is not tied to any particular religion. People of a wide variety of religious and spiritual backgrounds have sought Reiki treatment and after experiencing its effects have gone on to become practitioners themselves. It complements other forms of medical, psychiatric, or naturalistic treatments but does not replace them. Typically Reiki involves the practitioner laying his hands upon the body of the recipient but the technique can be conducted from a distance as well. Sensations that the recipient may experience are as numerous as the effects the energy may have. All of the bodily senses are quite capable of recognizing this energy, but it is most commonly described as a warm radiant glowing that courses through the body.
