Prior to the publication, in 1978, of CERA Bulletin 117, Detroit's Street Railways; Volume I: City Lines 18631922, electric rail transportation in the State of Michigan was last covered in book form when, in 1959, CERA published "The Electric Railways of Michigan." Detroit's street railway history was only briefly outlined in that book; therefore, this new series should interest persons who want a more detailed history of the Detroit system. Volume I covers street railways in Detroit from their historical inception in 1863 to municipalization in 1922. Lineage of the predecessor companies, their leaders, politics and social impact on the City of Detroit is studied. Many of the early corporations overlapped, merged or went out of business. Some companies were products of political tactics. Consolidation of the city and suburban operations came on December 31, 1900, when the Detroit United Railway was created by merging the Detroit Citizens Street Railway; Detroit, Fort Wayne and Belle Isle Railway, and The Detroit Electric Railway. Between 1901 and 1920, the Detroit United Railway conducted its operations without competition except for its running battle with city hall. Then in 1920, the City of Detroit built and began to operate a small competing street railway that was commonly referred to as the "Municipal Operation." This volume begins at 12:01 a.m., May 15, 1922, when the City of Detroit, through its Department of Street Railways, (the D.S.R.) commenced the municipal ownership and operation of all street railways within the city boundaries. Though public ownership and operation is common today, indeed nearly universal, Detroit was the first large American city to seek an alternative to privately owned mass transportation facilities. The thirty-four years of D.S.R. streetcar service are presented chronologically in four chapters: Chapter I covers the initial eight years of ownership, a period of rehabilitation of the fixed plant and the purchase of new rolling stock. Chapters 2 through 4 follow the D.S.R. through the Great Depression, the riding revival of World War II, and the highway oriented society of the post-war era. The final conversion to bus came in 1956. Additional chapters detail the development of suburban lines, freight services, and experimental trolley coaches, with the later trolley coach lines as well as the extension of rail service into the Ford Motor Company's sprawling River Rouge complex. Of particular interest are special features such as simulated trips on those car lines which survived World War II, and a detailed look at the new (1976) Washington Boulevard trolley with its historic Lisbon, Portugal cars. Volume II is rounded out by an appendix for both Volume I and II which includes a complete list of all streetcar lines and a chronology of important dates. Pictures taken through the years illustrate the streetcar era in Detroit. The roster of equipment and maps detail the equipment and routes operated. Memorabilia completes the presentation. The complete work should be of interest to historians, rail enthusiasts and the general public alike, thus fulfilling the purpose of these volumes as a general reference work on the history of the Detroit street railway era. A subsequent volume will detail the history and operation of the Detroit United Railway's interurban lines. All pictures are of the actual item.
