Description: About the book: "Desert of the Heartby Jane Rule is a captivating novel that delves into the forbidden love between two women in the 1950s. Set in Reno, it explores the complexities of desire and the courage to embrace one's true self." About the author: Jane Rule has been dubbed the greatest lesbian writer of our generation because of the ground breaking work she did to publish Desert of the Heart, a 1964 novel that dared to describe a lesbian couple succeeding in a long-term relationship. This book is notable for being the first literary work that approached same sex relationships between women in a loving, respectful manner. Additionally, Desert of the Heart was finally published in 1964, after it was rejected 22 times by other publishers. At the time of its publication, gay relationships were still illegal in Canada and England, and Jane Rule risked her freedom and job when releasing this novel. Jane Rule received the second Terasen Lifetime Achievement Award for an Outstanding Literary Career in British Columbia in 1996. She was awarded the Order of British Columbia in 1998 and the Order of Canada in 2006. The University of British Columbia has a fund, The Jane Rule Initiative, to support the study of human relationships. Why this book is so special: There were two versions of Desert of the Heart that were released in 1964- a Macmillan version released in Canada and this Secker and Warburg version, released in England. This is a first edition/first printing of the 1964 Secker and Warburg UK edition that includes its original dustjacket. Additionally, this book is signed and contains a rare Inscription. While a few other volumes have appeared that have been signed "Jane Rule," this book contains an inscription signed "Jinx," the nickname Jane Rule used with close friends and family. I have not been able to find another volume signed in this manner in the two years I have been searching. Condition: This volume is in very good condition. The inside pages are in excellent condition, with no marks or flaws, with the exception of the inscription Jane Rule wrote. The book includes its original dustjacket, but the dustjacket does show some wear on the inside. The bottom spine has a very small crease along the bottom edge, but no other flaws are noted. Please let me know if you would like any additional photos or details. I am happy to provide them!
