He became an engraving student of Louis Paul Pierre Dumont. He exhibited for the first time at the Paris Salon in 1867, wood engravings after Gustave Doré. A regular exhibitor, Prunaire became a member of the Salon des artistes français in 1884, and was rewarded during the universal exhibitions of 1889 and 1900. Beraldi recalls that he reproduced works by Daumier, Delacroix, Dunki, Pille, Popelin, Sahib, N. Saunier...In 1869, he executed for his friend Philippe Burty the frontispiece of Sonnets and etchings after Édouard Renard. According to Paul Cassirer, we also owe him a translation on wood of Manet's Olympia. Finally, from 1894, he was one of the main engravers of the Mariani Album. In the early 1870s, Prunaire owned a workshop in Valvins, where Burty was able to introduce him to Stéphane Mallarmé.Having also produced etchings of great finesse, Prunaire left behind an abundant body of work, and relatively few original works taken from his own drawings. He worked for a long time for the Chalcographie du Louvre.One of his closest friends was the painter Charles Edme Saint Marce.
