Description: Unbound. 8vo. Harper and Row, New York. 1973. 179 pgs. Pre-Production typescript with the pages printed on one side only. Unbound with plain cloth boards. Boards have light shelf-wear present to the extremities. Some notation present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. John Baggs, Yeoman 2/c, USN, is detached from his ship and sent to the naval hospital in Portsmouth, VA., for treatment of a painful cyst. At the hospital, Baggs's pain abates, the cyst turns out to be a false alarm, and, to boot, hospital authorities lose Baggs's personnel records. Without those files, Baggs is a non-person as far as the Navy is concerned. He leads a rather Kafkaesque existence, eating, sleeping, living in the hospital while the bureaucratic machinery of the service grinds on in search of his records. Weeks become months, and eventually the hospital authorities grant Baggs a nightly pass to leave the hospital and go into greater Norfolk. His "Cinderella liberty" requires that he return to the hospital at midnight every night. WIthout much fanfare, Baggs meets Maggie, a Norfolk bargirl with three children. They set up housekeeping, despite the fact that Baggs has to subsist on whatever money he can cadge from fellow hospital patients and on "leftovers" he can bring from the hospital mess to feed the kids. (No records, no payday.) When Maggie becomes pregnant, she and Baggs wed, despite the fact that the Navy won't recognize the marriage. Baggs is a great character - a veteran sailor (in the middle of his second four-year hitch) a few credits short a college degree who was studying physics on a theology scholarship (he's constantly admonishing others for taking the Lord's name in vain), who also harbors an immense grudge against Forshay, the sadist who commanded Baggs's unit during his basic training. Baggs is constantly searching for Forshay - and you know that, before the story is through, their meeting will be fateful. CINDERELLA LIBERTY focuses closely on Baggs, his relationship with the Navy, and his relationship with his new "family." It's not a perfect novel, nor would I call it a vivid portrayal of Navy life. (After all, most sailors do not have their records lost or wind up marrying bargirls.) Despite the pathos, Ponicsan plays the tale of John Baggs largely for laughs, and there are at least a couple of laugh-out-loud moments in the book. But there is sympathy too, both for Maggie and her kids, and for the young sailor trying to find a place in life. A film version of CINDERELLA LIBERTY, directed by Mark Rydell and starring James Caan and Marsha Mason, was released in 1973 by Twentieth Century Fox. Ponicsan wrote the screenplay, and it sticks pretty close to the book. Mason got an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Maggie, and Caan is pretty good as well.
