Description: DANIEL MORGAN. Daniel Morgan (1736–1802) was an American pioneer, soldier, and congressman from Virginia considered one of the most gifted battlefield tacticians of the Revolutionary War. He defeated Banastre Tarleton at the Battle of Cowpens in January 1781 forcing Charles Cornwallis to pull his troops out of South Carolina and move them farther north. Tarleton and Cornwallis later surrendered at the Battle of Yorktown in October 1781 putting an end to the war. DOCUMENT SIGNED BY DANIEL MORGAN AGREEING TO HAVE HIS PROPERTY SEIZED “ONE NEGROE & ONE MARE” OVER A LAWSUIT BROUGHT AGAINST HIM Partly-printed document signed by, “Dan’l Morgan,” agreeing to have his property seized, including “one negroe & one mare,” over a lawsuit brought against him by McNair & Company. Contains two pages on a single leaf, measures 13.25 by 8 inches, created in Frederick County, Virginia on May 17, 1788, and in very fine condition with toning, soiling, and a small tear to the bottom border.
