Description: The end of one side has engraved: "C 2009 DMA . TY-888-001 - DMA - 11 - 11- 17." The "DMA," stands for Dallas Museum of Arts. Looking at their web site, they have a number of ancient cylinders from many diverse cultures. The lettering is small, but you can see it in the last photo. The "C" stands for Copyright. This wood cylinder reminds me of the "Enigma," machine that was developed by the German Military during WWII. Although the German Enigma was not wood, it is a similar concept. The Enigma rotating disks were altered every day, and thereby changed the decoding totally from one day to the next, What the Germans did not know is that the British, broke the code very early in the war. Credit must be given to the three Polish mathematical geniuses who broke the code working with the British. The British kept their discovery quite secret. History records that the British knowingly allowed losses so as not to tip off the German's that they were fully aware of their movements by land and by sea. The British saved this knowledge for the time in the war when it mattered most. The above said, I don't really know the use or purpose of this cylinder. What I do know is that it's very well made. Everything moves very fluidly. The condition is excellent. Shipping: USPS., FedEx., or UPS (depending upon delivery location). I will package this piece with great care for shipping. At this time I am shipping throughout the lower 48 states.
