The brighter setting for bright daytime use and the lower setting for lower light indoors and out. Once you mount t and get it set, it is lots of fun and is much quicker acquisition than standard sights. Remember to keep both eyes open. It is all satin black high impact plastic. It feels solid enough, but like most optics it should be used carefully. The switch (off/low/high) is plastic and does protrude a bit, but just knowing that I am gentle with it.It includes one battery that lasts a good long time as long as you remember to turn it off when not in use (yes, I do that, too).Better yet, the battery is a common watch type round battery that is easy to find (I got my last ones at one of the big box stores right by the checkout) and not expensive. Length: about 4.25 inchesVery light weight.It is rated for both air guns and .22 rimfire so it can handle that amount of recoil. I am using it successfully on air guns, so not a concern.
