Description: CSS Bombshell: Confederate Navy Ship in Civil War Service memorial ship first day cover postmarked at Denver, CO on May 19, 1995. Image of the ship from the "Battle of Albemarle Sound" drawing printed in blue on cachet #2575 by Alvin Eckert, #9964, USCS. Cover franked with a 3 cent UCV Veterans stamp # 998 and a 32 cent Flag stamp (FDOI). Cover prepared on an Quality Envelope with gum on the flap. CSS Bombshell was formerly a 90' side-wheel steamer that carried cargo on the Erie Canal. The vessel entered Union Army service as a troop transport. On April 18, 1864 she was sunk in Albemarle Sound, NC by Confederate batteries. She was raised and commissioned in the CSN later that month. She was later re-captured by the USS Mattabesett and USS Sassacus on May 5, 1864, and was sent to NYC for repairs and further service.
