Description: The popular hymn “Crown Him with Many Crowns” is based on a vision of Christ found in Revelation 19:12: “His eyes blazed like fire, and on his head were many crowns.” The melody was composed especially for this text by Sir George Elvey, organist at St. George's Chapel in Windsor, England, where the British royal family normally attend Easter service. Sir George named the piece “Diademata” (the Greek word for Crowns). The original six verses for this hymn, entitled “The Song of the Seraphs,” were written in 1851 by Matthew Bridges, an Anglican clergyman who had become Roman Catholic in 1848. Some 23 years later, another Anglican clergyman, Godfrey Thring, sensed that the lyrics by Bridges were far too “Romish.” He thereupon wrote six new verses. “Crown Him with Many Crowns,” already a lengthy 6-verse hymn, now had 12 verses! Over the years, these 12 stanzas became intermingled in hymn books, with editors mixing and matching them. In the spirit of ecumenical concord, the hymn here presented offers the first 2 verses by Bridges, the last 2 by Thring.
