Criminal Justice 2 is an engrossing, five-part, BAFTA Award-winning series about a woman charged with stabbing her barrister husband as he lay in bed. The officials investigating the case are in no doubt as to her guilt, though her motives are called into question. As she passes through the British legal system under constant scrutiny, the terrible consequences of her actions become clear. Criminal Justice 2 is a precise dissection of a court case whose results remain hazy until the very end of the suspenseful last episode. In this miniseries' case, the show's excruciatingly realistic precision, like CSI or The Wire, is what makes it both difficult to watch and too gripping to stop watching. While each of five episodes charts Juliet Miller (Maxine Peake) and her 13-year-old daughter, Ella (Alice Sykes), struggling through the consequences Juliet faces after stabbing her abusive husband, Joe (Matthew Macfadyen), the aim of Criminal Justice 2 is to illustrate how the British law system handles grueling criminal defense cases in which crimes are committed for somewhat understandable reasons. In this second series of Criminal Justice, the story is complicated by the fact that the victim, Joe, is a respected barrister who has worked with the judge assigned to the case. This and other details that would allow corruption to seep in are poignantly handled throughout the plot; for the most part the characters prone to corruption pay their dues, implying that the British courts are places where real justice can reign supreme. However, the story's conflict hinges upon the battle between a hard-edged treatment of Miller enacted by the police team and Miller's empathetic and astute defense attorneys. While the opening episode is dedicated to setup, in which the viewer witnesses the crime and understands what the daughter, Ella, sees of it, the second episode begins to map the case against Miller that is constructed over the next three episodes by detectives Bill Faber (Denis Lawson), Chris Sexton (Steven Mackintosh), and Flo Sexton (Kate Hardie). By the third episode, one sees gender lines emerging in the abuse debate, as Juliet's criminal defense barrister, Anna Klein (Zoe Telford), and her very kind solicitor, Jackie Woolf (Sophie Okonedo), take a feminist approach to their argument, which says Miller was oppressed under abusive duress and therefore should suffer minimal consequences. By the time the trial begins in the fourth episode, Juliet and Ella have suffered greatly from Miller's time in prison, and it is up to the mother-daughter team to rectify this disastrous situation by recalling the crime accurately and telling the truth based on painful memories. The question is, are they strong enough? Enough sympathy for Miller is cultivated throughout that the viewer, in closing, hopes that they will be. Shipping Information FREE SHIPPING!
