Description: Memoirs and Correspondence of Coventry Patmore by Basil Chapneys, a Two Volume Set published by George Bell & Sons, London, original 1st Edition of 1900, manufactured by the Chiswick Press, London, England. Each volume 9 by 6” by 2” thick, in light brown cloth over board hard cover with gilded titles on the spines, tissue protected engravings of Patmore as frontispiece in each volume, profusely illustrated with other engravings and full page plates, also several fold out facsimiles of his letters and drafts of poetry, ragged edge page blocks, five appendices and general index in the back of the 2nd volume. Coventry Patmore (1823-1896) is one of the least known but best regarded of the English Victorian poets and essayists. Closely associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in his early years, and friends with such great poets such as Alfred Lord Tennyson and Gerard Manley Hopkins, he converted to Roman Catholicism in 1862. This is the great double volume work on the life and work of this enigmatic and unusual figure in English literature. Condition of the books graded AS-IS. These were library books removed from the Malden Public Library in 1901, and there is external cover wear with a bit of chipping to the top spine faces and library inventory numbers written in at the base of the spines. The books were bound tightly at some point in their history and the covers are a bit bowed due to this, but all the wear is mostly external; the interior text in both volumes is clean, fresh and virtually unmarked. It is a collector's set of this great work on Coventry Patmore-, lower priced due to the external AS-IS condition noted.A postage and handling contribution of $20.00s included in the listing price for this item, due to its larger size and heavier weight in shipping.Shipping and Handling costs are included FREE for this purchase, if mailed within Canada or to the USA.
