Description: Coronet Limoges Plate 9 1/4" HandPainted by Barbet Orange Poppies Gold 1908-1914 Elegant Decorative 9 1/4" PLATE from CORONET (George Borgfeldt) Limoges, France, HAND PAINTED by a Renown Limoges Artist Barbet, Beautiful Large Classy RED POPPIES w/GREEN LEAVES & Buds, WIDE GOLD on Scalloped, Embossed Rim, production time period circa 1908-1914 DESCRIPTION: This plate was designed in a very classic pattern with a hand painted red/orange poppy blooms proudly displayed above the green leaves by the renown, talented Limoges artist, Barbet. (This artist is listed in the reference books as Barbet, but some sellers miss read it as Barbot.) The overall quality of the design is quite professional. The poppy blooms, leaves and stems are displayed on washes varying from deep green to light green to yellow to orange. The hairy stems just look so real. The hand painting looks very realistic and reminds me so much of the poppies we see in photographs of the poppy fields.. The rim is scalloped and embossed with heavy gold paint that is tinted to a red hue. To see more of Barbet's work, consult Plate #170 in Mary Frank Gaston's Collector's Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain 3rd Edition book or search online. The back of the plate is the high white of the porcelain. CONDITION: While this plate is classified as used, its condition is superb. We can find no defects or damage. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, crazing or hairlines. There is no wear to the paint or gold. See the photos. DIMENSIONS: The plate has a diameter of 9 1/4" and a height of 1". HISTORY/MARKS: George Borgfeldt operated a New York importing company specializing in high end decorated porcelain from Limoges, France and Bavaria, Germany. Borgfeldt established art studios in both France and Germany. The French Studio trademarked Coronet was located in Paris, but the white ware for this plate was manufactured in Limoges. Mary Frank Gaston in Collector’s Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd edition, refers to the decorator mark on this plate as mark #1 used 1906-1920. It also has the underglaze green manufacturer's mark for #1 Paul Maurice Mavaleix used 1908-1914. The circa for this plate is the 1908-1914 time period.
