After 2 months of service on Malta with 249 Sqn. this aircraft was flown in combat by newly-arrived supernumary squadron leader 'Mike' Stephens (a Battle of France ace). His first successes over Malta came on 10th October 1942 when he was credited with 1 BF-109 probable and 1 damaged. Stephens went on to command 229 Sqn. and then the Hal Far Wing. EP706 continued with 249 Sqn. before being lost due to engine failure while on patrol.
